The Origins of 420, 710, and Other Weed Holidays

Cannabis enthusiasts around the world celebrate various holidays dedicated to the plant, each with its own unique significance and history. Among the most widely recognized are 420 and 710, which have become emblematic of cannabis culture. But where do these numbers come from, and what’s the story behind them?

420: The Timeless Symbol of Cannabis Culture

The origin of “420” can be traced back to a group of high school students in California in the early 1970s. Legend has it that in 1971, a group of friends known as the “Waldos” would meet at 4:20 p.m. after school to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. Although they never found the elusive stash, their code word “420” became synonymous with smoking marijuana. Over time, 420 evolved into a cultural phenomenon, symbolizing not only the time to partake in cannabis but also a sense of camaraderie and shared experience among enthusiasts worldwide.

710: The Rise of Concentrates

Unlike 420, the origins of “710” are more closely tied to the cannabis concentrate community. When flipped upside down, the numbers “710” spell “OIL” – a reference to cannabis oils, extracts, and concentrates. While the exact origins of 710 as a cannabis holiday are less clear compared to 420, it has gained popularity in recent years, particularly among dabbing enthusiasts. July 10th (7/10) has been designated as the official 710 day, celebrated with events, sales, and community gatherings focused on concentrates and dabbing culture.

Other Weed Holidays: A Celebration of Cannabis Diversity

In addition to 420 and 710, cannabis enthusiasts have created a myriad of other holidays to celebrate the plant and its diverse culture. From April 20th to April 22nd, known as “420 Weekend,” to “Hemp History Week” in June, which honors the historical and industrial significance of hemp, there’s no shortage of opportunities to celebrate cannabis in all its forms. Other notable holidays include “Green Wednesday” (the day before Thanksgiving) and “Marijuana Day” (June 9th), among many others.
